FORMATION
The idea to establish the Association of Nigerian Exporters (
ANE) was conceived by some far-sighted
Nigerian businesspersons in 1981 as a response to the series of trade inquiries received during
their trade missions to Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana, as well as the subsequent ones to
the States of New York, Georgia and Pennsylvania in the United States of America. The Association was
formally inaugurated on August 8, 1984.
STATUS
The Association of Nigerian Exporters (
ANE) is the apex Organized Private Sector (OPS) body approved
by the Federal Ministry of Justice and incorporated in 1988 by the then Federal Ministry of Trade
as a non-profit organization, Limited by Guarantee for the development and promotion of export in
all its ramifications.
The Association of Nigerian Exporters is the statutory representative of Nigerian Exporters. In this
light, the Association of Nigerian Exporters represents the private export sector on the Boards
of Government Agencies & Committees responsible for export development and promotion including
the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Nigeria Export
Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), States’ Export Promotion Committees, Nigeria Committee On Trade
Procedures (NITPRO), Presidential Committee on Export-oriented companies, etc.
- ANE is the VOICE OF THE EXPORT SECTOR in Nigeria.
- ANE has sectoral relationships with trade facilitating ministries, parastatals and international agencies.
- ANE has nationwide membership.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
ANE has been established with the following mandates:
- To promote export business in all ramifications.
- To raise, maintain, and regulate the standards of export practice in Nigeria.
- To promote professional ethics and efficiency in export administration and practice among members.
- To collate and circulate export statistics and information of all kinds.
- To increase public knowledge and expertise, disseminate and exchange information and ideas on export matters.
- To advise the Federal and State Governments on matters related to export practice in Nigeria and elsewhere.
- To maintain relationships with similar bodies in other countries and enter into Agreement.
STRATEGIES
ANE’s objectives are pursued through various strategies and activities including:
Policy Advocacy: Initiating and facilitating Export policy formulations, and implementation of Export incentives.
Training: Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and professional courses.
Product development: Guidance from raw state to finished, competitive, world-standard products.
Market Development: Research, foreign market access, organization and participation in International Trade Fairs/Exhibitions/Trade Missions, and sourcing buyers for Nigerian Exporters.
Information Dissemination: Collation, Publication, Circulation and Broadcast of export Information.
Liaison: Referencing corporate members and liaising with Foreign Embassies, Bilateral/ Multilateral Trade Support Agencies and Nigerian Commercial Consulates abroad on export-oriented matters.
Project Promotion: Export-oriented investment, Export project advisory services, Export finance sourcing, etc.
MILESTONES
ANE has recorded fundamental achievements since its inception through policy advocacy.
For instance,
ANE championed:
- the establishment of Cocoa Association of Nigeria in 1986;
- the reactivation of the NEPC in 1988;
- the establishment of NEXIM Bank in 1991;
- the commencement of Calabar Export Processing Zone project in 1991; and
- the creation of various export incentives.
PROSPECTS
In this millennium, ANE is poised to facilitate sustainable export policies, export-oriented investments,
Production of competitive products and adequate promotion of Nigerian exportable products/services through
trade missions, exhibitions & trade fairs worldwide.
